She began her career as a journalist in 1983, after relocating to Bristol and working as a television reporter for HTV West and the BBC. Lisa became one of the first Muslim newscasters when she joined TV-AM as the main newscaster in 1988.

She joined Sky News in 1992, but continued to broadcast news for TV-AM. She later became one of Sky News’ senior news anchors, where she worked until 2005.

In August 2005, she returned to Bristol, West Country, to become the lead presenter and associate editor of ITV News program The West Tonight. She was fired from ITV after five years of service for allegedly falsifying her expenses.
