Kia Joorabchian was born in Tehran, Iran, on July 14, 1971, as the son of Iranian auto trader Mohammed Joorabchian. His father’s uncle, according to Joorabchian, previously ran the Middle East’s largest automobile factory.
The Joorabchian family fled Iran after the Shah was overthrown in 1979. When Joorabchian was six years old, they traveled to the United Kingdom and then to Canada before returning to England. His father was the owner and operator of several car dealerships, including Medway Autos in Ken.

Before becoming a dealer at the International Petroleum Exchange in London, Joorabchian worked for his father. He became interested in the stock market and fund management, relocating to New York City and co-founding American Capital with his colleague Reza Irani-Kermanian, which is based in Manhattan but registered in the British Virgin Islands.
On January 12, 2010, ESPN reported that Joorabchian had been promoted to the position of “Football Advisor” at the club and that he would be overseeing a player purge, bringing in promising young players from all over the world.
