His first musical, Sacrimmoralinority, was written by David Glenn Armstrong. It was first shown at Adelphi University, where he went to school, in the winter of 1981.

After Larson and Armstrong graduated from college in 1982, the musical cabaret with a Brechtian theme was renamed Saved! – An Immoral Musical on the Moral Majority and played for four weeks at Rusty’s Storefront Blitz, a small theater on 42nd Street in Manhattan. The show won both authors an ASCAP writing award.

Larson wrote music and lyrics for Sacred Cows with Rusty Magee, Bob Golden, Paul Scott Goodman, and Jeremy Roberts in 1992. The show was planned and pitched to TV networks as a weekly anthology in which each episode took a different Biblical or mythological story and gave it a ’90s celebrity twist.

In 1988, playwright Billy Aronson had the idea to turn La Bohème into a musical. He pictured “a musical based on Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème, but with the roughness and noise of modern New York City in place of Puccini’s rich, beautiful world.”
