Jesse Rutherford can be recognized with being one of those figures that made biker jackets and monochrome timeless once again, despite the fact that he sang about knitwear.
It was a no-brainer for him to team up with influencer Devon Lee Carlson in 2015, after bleaching half of his hair and having tattoos that looked like bubblegum bubbles. Carlson rose to prominence thanks to her sister Sydney’s YouTube vlogs. Her edgy fashion sense, on the other hand, immediately gained her a name for herself. She is now best recognized for creating the Wildflower phone case line and collaborating with renowned designer Marc Jacobs. Jesse Rutherford and Carlson were hailed by GQ as “2019’s most 2019 pair.” They’re still the go-to for pair fashion inspiration two years later.
Jesse Rutherford and Devon Lee Carlson: Fashion Couple Goals
Rutherford is a fashion icon in his own right. He explored the aisles of Hot Topic at the local mall since he was a child. During his teen years, he also worked at retailers like Vans and Urban Outfitters, which influenced his skater-Esque palette. He was, and continues to be, a voracious fashion consumer, and his hunger quickly outpaced the available possibilities.
This is when he started experimenting with unorthodox silhouettes in the women’s division. He would be seen wearing conservative sweatshirts and Dickie’s slacks during the early days of his band, The Neighbourhood.
Inevitably, he found the stage to be a source of comfort and began expressing himself in skinny jeans, leather jackets, and even going shirtless, all while flaunting his numerous tattoos. He soon went it a step further by donning a pair of vivid striped leggings and matching his hair coloring to the colors.
He is now seen taking references from David Bowie and coating himself in chrome paint as the Californian band’s sound matures into more experimental electro-pop with their album Chip Chrome. Off-stage, he still dresses like the mannequins at Hot Topic, but the brands are all designer. While Rutherford is in left field, Carlson, his girlfriend, is in charge of what’s hot and what’s not. She is a trendsetter, having popularized slinky slip-dresses with small sunglasses, dad hats, tie-dies, and the Y2K revival, to mention a few.
With her next Marc Jacobs collaboration, it appears that 2021 will be the year of bubblegum pink and Haute loungewear. That said, what makes this duo so appealing is how well-coordinated their outfits are. This is also something that is done on purpose. Carlson told GQ that they always make a point of arriving together, no matter where they are. They’re a force to be reckoned with when they’re all working together.
The Love Life
Carlson admitted in a 2020 interview on Canadian model Charlotte D’Alessio’s YouTube channel that she had always liked Rutherford while they were at school. He was a senior at the time, and she was a junior, with completely different social circles. She found herself being reserved around him when they first met. She was frightened to dispute with him, for example, because she feared he would lose his calm.
When they slept over together, she would even go to the trouble of getting up early and scrubbing her teeth so he wouldn’t notice her morning breath. But she was just 18 years old at the time, and her naivety got the better of her. They eventually broke up and started seeing other individuals, only to rekindle their romance in 2015. They rediscovered an amazing bond and candor that they could not have found anywhere else.
They’re still going strong six years later, with mutual understanding and a wardrobe to die for.
