Both Bender brothers developed an early passion for basketball. Dragan and his brother, who is two years older, practiced together and were already developing into exceptional players at an early age.
Accident of a Brother
Dragan’s brother, Ivan, was tragically killed in a 2012 accident. He had earned a position on Croatia’s under-18 national team, and the entire family was overjoyed. However, he tore his ACL during a match and required surgery.
Ivan tore the same ACL again six months later and had to undergo even more difficult operations.
The sad accidents had a significant impact on Ivan’s career, but they taught Dragan a lot. On the court, he never puts himself in danger.

Dragan began his professional career at an extremely young age. As a 14-year-old, he competed in the U-16 European Championships for the Croatian national team. He later signed with Tel Aviv and then the Phoenix Suns.
