Dusty Locane has made a name for himself as another New York-bred rapper who rose to fame early. Locane, unlike other Brooklyn rappers such as Biggie or Mos Def, never sought to build a reputation for himself in hip-hop.
After releasing his ‘Rollin n Controllin’ Freestyle’ in August 2020, Locane, popularly known as ‘The Floss,’ came to stardom. Prior to then, Dusty Locane was completely uninterested in rap.
Locane wanted to be a professional basketball player.
Initially, the budding rapper planned to fulfill his ambition of playing professional basketball. When he was younger, he used to practice at the gym after school. Unfortunately for the rapper, things did not go as planned, and he was forced to give up his NBA goals. On the other hand, his life had condemned him to the streets.
The rapper talked about how rap helped him get his life back on track in an interview with Elevator Magazine. To be honest, if it weren’t for rap, I’d be locked up or, worse, six feet, but that’s life, and it’s a good thing I’m doing what I’m doing now.
He also told the outlet how he accidentally realized he could spit out bars. On a fall afternoon, he was out with his right-hand man, YJ, when his narrative began.
Dusty Locane is Pop Smoke’s cousin, right?
Another pressing question from fans was addressed in one of the videos: “Is Dusty Locane Pop Smoke’s cousin?” The answer is an unequivocal yes! Locane went on to add that he grew up with the late artist, whose true name was Bashar Barakah Jackson. They went to the same schools and hung out together after school.
However, as time went on, the two grew apart. He also stated that he didn’t appreciate fans bringing up the late rapper’s name on social media alongside his own.
His First Ever Freestyle Was a Struggle
Locane had just received a beat from YJ. Despite the fact that Locane had never written rap before, he was eager to take on the challenge.
“Of course, I didn’t expect it to do what it did when I heard the beat and was like, ‘Hold on, run that [expletive] back,'” Locane said of that day. That wasn’t the intention, but it turned out that way.” Despite the fact that he stumbled into the game by accident, the rapper appears to have no plans to leave anytime soon.
The rapper spoke with Genius about the meaning of his song “Rolando (Caught In The Rain),” as well as the mindset that inspired him to pursue rap as a career option.
The rapper admitted to having served time in prison for an unidentified offence. He stated that he would not mind returning even after he had departed. When he was offered the chance to make money through rap, he decided, why not? He realized it was a more secure path to a better life for himself and his family.
