Perkins was born on February 9, 1976, in New York City, New York. He is the son of actor Anthony Perkins and photographer and actress Berry Berenson. He grew up in Los Angeles and Manhattan with his older brother.
Perkins attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, after graduating from the Harvard-Westlake School in 1994. Perkins began playing music at a young age, briefly studying the saxophone before switching to guitar in high school and learning from Prescott Niles, a former bassist for The Knack.
