Relationship Status

Ata’s marriage was not without its challenges. Her marriage to Canadian professional wrestler Wayde Douglas Bowles, better known as Turbulent Johnson, was, indeed, rocky.

The two had a traditional first meeting, exchanging glances on the independent circuit, where they became tag team teammates and fell in love. However, Rocky’s love was an adulterous romance because he was already married to his then-wife Una. He married Ata, however, only after he divorced Una.

While the two lovebirds were set to marry, Ata’s father, who was also a wrestler, as opposed to their union. Peter Maivia, her late father, was a professional wrestler who recognized the disadvantages of marrying a wrestler.

Nonetheless, as a rebel, Ata followed her heart and married. In 1978, she married the wrestler. After six years, Ata gave birth to the well-known Dwayne Johnson, also known as The Rock.

However, within a decade of their marriage, the couple began to face difficulties.

Rocky was arrested and charged for a variety of delicate issues in 1987, effectively ending his illustrious career. He was blacklisted from wrestling, which set him on an erratic path to alcoholism.

The allegations were as destructive to Ata and her family as they were to the wrestler.
In the midst of the media frenzy and slanders, Ata felt it was best for her and her son to move away from marriage, ending in a divorce from Rocky Johnson. Rocky died in 2020, which was a tragedy.

Junior Johnson, who is mourning the death of his 75-year-old father, took to Instagram to share a touching video of his late father’s wrestling fight.

The writer of Jumanji went on to write,

“You broke color barriers, became a ring legend and trail blazed your way thru this world… Dad, I wish I had one more shot to tell you, I love you, before you crossed over to the other side. But you were ripped away from me so fast, without warning…”

Problems with Mental Health

Ata Johnson, 72, is most known as Dwayne Johnson’s mother, but her influence stretches well beyond that. She is a survivor, more than a wife and mother. Cancer, a devastating accident, and a near-suicide attempt have all been challenges for the proud warrior.

Her suicide attempt had remained hidden until Dwayne’s post, in which he highlighted how strong his mother is.

On Mum’s Day, he shared a beautiful photo of himself and his mother and commented,

“My mom’s been thru it all….cancer survivor, evictions, head-on collision by a drunk driver, suicide attempt (still to this day she has a zero recollection of me pulling her off the middle of the highway avoiding oncoming traffic), and decades of being married to a ramblin’ pro wrestler.”

The former wrestler’s health seems to have suffered greatly as a result of his tough prior life. However, she seemed to have overcome her past and gone on with her life.
