Don Lane was an Australian-born talk show host and performer best known for hosting The Don Lane Show on the Nine Network from 1975 to 1983, as well as his concerts with Bert Newton.

Don Lane- Early Life

Lane was born on November 13, 1933, in New York City, to a Jewish father, Jacob, and a Catholic mother, Dolly, who later converted to Judaism. Jacob “Jack” Isaacson was a sergeant in the New York City Police Department, and Dolly was a housewife (NYPD).

Morton (Don) attended DeWitt Clinton High School in The Bronx, where he was classmates with Judd Hirsch and Garry Marshall. Isaacson had decided by his mid-teens that he wanted to go in the show business because of his mother’s domineering demeanor. He even placed a star on his bedroom door.

He began to perform at family events with his parents, usually combining singing and comedy. He also participated in varsity football and basketball at DeWitt Clinton High School.

He went on to Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on a football and basketball scholarship, where he stayed for three years.

Career

Following his graduation from college, Isaacson formed the duet “Donny and the Duke” with his best friend Manny Glasser. The two worked in New York nightclubs for a few months before Isaacson was drafted into the US Army at the age of 21.

After winning the All-Army entertainment contest, the duo was invited to perform on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1955. A year later, Isaacson won the All-Army entertainment tournament as a solo act. Following his obligatory army service, he spent two years entertaining soldiers around the United States.

During his time on The Don Lane Show, Lane also co-hosted a morning radio show with Bert Newton on Melbourne’s 3UZ radio station. Newton tells a story about how he and the producer pretended to be on the radio and accidentally gave Lane’s home location to the listener.

Relationship Status

Lane married Jayne Ambrose, a talent agent, and they had a son, Phillip Jacob “P.J.” Isaacson. His son pursued his basketball career in the United States and later Europe, but he went on to become a successful artist in his own right under the alias PJ Lane.

After caring for his ailing father, he returned to Sydney in 2009. Lane and Ambrose were good friends after their divorce, and she was his agent for the rest of his life.
