Diane Simone Michele Halfin was born on December 31, 1946, in Brussels, Belgium. Her father was from Moldova, and her mother was from Greece, and they were both Jewish. Her mother was a prisoner at the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland during the Holocaust, and Diane von Furstenberg was born only 18 months after her mother was liberated.
The 77-year-old was raised in an international setting, attending boarding school in Oxfordshire, England, and then university in Madrid and Geneva. During her early university years, she met Prince Egon von Fürstenburg, whom she married at the age of 18 in 1969.
