Brooks and Allan Burns created The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which ran on CBS from September 19, 1970, to March 19, 1977. The sitcom lasted seven seasons and had 168 episodes.

Mary Tyler Moore, the heroine and nameake of the film, was accompanied by Ed Asner, Ted Knight, Valerie Harper, Rhoda Morgenstern, Georgia Engel, Gavin MacLeod, Cloris Leachman, and Betty White, among others. Unfortunately, the majority of them have died, leaving White as the show’s only surviving cast member.
Betty White is the lone survivor of the original cast
Despite the fact that White was not a founding member of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, she is regarded as one because of her influence on fans. She appeared on the sitcom for the final three seasons in 1973.
From Season 4 to Season 7, she played Sue Ann Nivens, the host of WJM’s The Happy Homemaker show. Nivens’ demeanor appears friendly on the surface, yet she is sneaky beneath the surface. Since Nivens was romantically engaged in Grant, she had the most screen time with Asner. Asner cherished his time with White till his death. He wished White a happy 99th birthday on Twitter in January 2021.
He captioned a photo of the two on the show with a kind remark. Asner stated that he adored White, and that even after all these years, looking at their photo still makes him feel warm.
In 2021, four of the main cast died
It’s been a difficult year for fans of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, as Asner’s death on August 28, 2021, marked the show’s fourth prominent cast member’s death. When he died, he was 91 years old.
Asner was the last surviving member of The Mary Tyler Moore Show’s original core ensemble. He was a well-known actor, activist, and union leader. He portrayed Lou Grant, the news director of WJM-TV, for seven years.
Thanks to the revolutionary series, the actor became the first TV celebrity to play the same role in two separate comedies. In the CBS drama Lou Grant, Asner played a new version of Grant’s role, a big-city newspaper editor.
Asner won three Emmys and received seven straight nominations for Supporting Comedy Actor for The Mary Tyler Moore Show, as well as two more Emmys for Lead Drama Actor for Lou Grant, during the series’ run. Richards’ friend and landlady Phyllis Lindstrom, played by Cloris Leachman, died in January at the age of 94. Burns, the show’s co-creator, died at the age of 85 in the same month.
MacLeod, who played news reporter Murray Slaughter throughout the show, died in May at the age of 90. Moore, on the other hand, died in 2017 at the age of 80.
