For over three decades, David Letterman hosted Late Night with David Letterman and Late Show with David Letterman. After the programs ended in 2015, he began spending more time with his family. Since 2009, the former talk show presenter has been married to Regina Lasko. Harry Joseph Letterman, the couple’s son, is their only child.
Letterman has been married to his wife for nearly 36 years, and he claims their bond has become even stronger since the birth of their son.
Here’s a look into Letterman’s marriage and connection with his son.
David Letterman aspires to be the best friend of his son. Letterman admitted in a 2019 interview with Today that he misses his life as a late-night talk show host.
However, he claims that the advantages of retiring outweigh the drawbacks and that the finest aspect of his new life is being able to spend more time with his son Harry.
Letterman also stated that he did not agree with the notion that parents should not be their children’s greatest friends.
“‘Well, you’re not going to be the kid’s best buddy,’ people usually remark. ‘You’re going to be his…’ And I’m like, ‘Fuck that!’ he exclaimed.
“Look at me,” he said, expressing his desire to be his child’s best buddy. I’m not sure how much longer I’ll remain here. “My ambition is to be the best buddy.”
David Letterman Bemoans the Lack of a Daughter
Letterman has regularly expressed his admiration for Harry. He has also been very forthright in expressing his affection for his wife. On the same note, he has expressed regret over not having a daughter.
Letterman revealed in an interview with Charlie Rose (via Dailymail) that he was too preoccupied with his TV profession to consider starting a family.
He afterwards realized that his previous perspective was incorrect.
“You miss a lot of what’s going on in your environment.” ‘I can’t do both,’ I reasoned. That was a mistake on my part. I now have a young son. He added, “I wish I had a little daughter [as well].”
Regina Lasko’s Relationship with David Letterman
In February 1986, Letterman began dating Lasko, who is now his wife. He was still living with Merrill Markoe, the former chief writer and producer of Late Night, at the time. Merrill Markoe had dated Letterman in 1978.
Lasko joined his show’s production crew in 1987 and stayed for two years, until 1989. Letterman and Lasko became parents for the first time after nearly 20 years of marriage. On November 3, 2003, Harry was born.
Despite the birth of their son, the couple did not marry for a long time. In truth, they only married in a small courtroom civil ceremony in Choteau, Montana, on March 19, 2009.
Later that year, in October, Letterman revealed on his show that he was being blackmailed by someone who threatened to divulge his personal ties with numerous female colleagues.
Letterman acknowledged to the claims and then discussed his affair with Oprah Winfrey. He said that Lasko had forgiven him, but that he couldn’t forgive himself for what he’d done.
