Bryant Gumbel, an American journalist, successfully kept his cancer struggle hidden from the public for months, concealing surgery and the reason for his weight loss. But it wasn’t just cancer that caused him to lose weight; even in his 50s, he exercised regularly and kept his physique in good shape.

Gumbel had kept his disease a secret from his HBO show, Real Sports, as well as his followers. He had never missed work and had always taped his monthly program on schedule. As a result, his colleagues and admirers were unaware that he had been diagnosed with cancer in late 2008 and had underwent surgery to remove the cancerous tumor.

Only two months after his operation, the media celebrity opened up about his condition while appearing on the American talk show Live With Regis and Kelly in the first week of December 2009.

He had appeared as a substitute for Regis Philbin on the show. And when Kelly asked him to dance behind the scenes, he had no choice but to reveal his operation.

It’s not that I’m afraid of it; it’s simply that I haven’t made it public. I had cancer surgery two months ago. The doctor went through his chest to remove the malignant tumor and a portion of his lung, according to the Louisiana native. He confessed that the procedure didn’t completely remove all malignant cells, and he needed to undergo additional treatments.

Despite the fact that the fundamental cause of lung cancer is never known, many speculated that his lung cancer was a long-term result of his chain smoking. The journalist used to smoke three packs a day when he was in his twenties. He gave up smoking after landing a job as an anchor at CBS News.

Thankfully, the operation was successful, and the majority of his pathology was found to be benign. He was cancer-free a year after starting the treatment, and he told People about it in December 2010. Bryant has now fully recovered and is the host of HBO’s critically acclaimed investigative series, Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel.

Exercise Helped Me Lose Weight

Bryant had previously adjusted his weight through exercising before his lung cancer played a key influence in his weight loss. After finishing his work at SportsCenter, he went to the gym every day and completed an hour of cardio.

An hour of weight lifting was also part of his daily practice. He told The Washington Post in 2003 that he had shed 55 pounds.
