Johnny Gill, an American singer, has always drawn attention due to numerous allegations about his marriage and sexuality.
Johnny Gill has a son, but the identity of the boy’s mother has always remained a mystery. As a result, people have associated Johnny’s lack of marriage with being a secret gay.
Today, we delve into our archives to find the answers to the two most often asked questions regarding Johnny Gill.
Relationship Status
Johnny Gill, the Rub You the Right Way hitmaker, has been asked this question since he rose to prominence.
He’s been in a lot of relationships in the past. And here is a list of his associates.
- Stacy Lattisaw
Johnny was romantically related to American R&B singer Stacy Lattisaw in the late 1980s.
The duo collaborated on various projects, including their sixth album, Perfect Combination, which was published in 1984. In 1989, they had a no-one hit on the charts with “Where Do We Go From Here.”
The relationship between Stacy and Johnny terminated in acrimony. Johnny accused Stacy’s parents of not considering him because he was black, which Stacy’s family rejected.

- Girlfriend of a reporter
In 2005, he was dating a Washington, DC reporter. They even had a son named Isiah Gill in 2006 before splitting up, but they never married. They were married for a year.
In an interview with ESSENCE in 2015, Gill discussed the difficulties he faced while being separated from his son Isiah Gill, as well as the difficulties of co-parenting. He also stated in the interview that he was on excellent terms with Isiah’s mother.
- Carissa Rosario
Johnny Gill dated American model Carissa Rosario after the reporter in 2008.
The couple got engaged and planned to marry in 2011, but the wedding was postponed since Johnny was busy preparing for the release of his album Still Winning. Carissa and Rosario eventually ended their relationship.
- Sherri Shepherd
He was secretly dating former The View co-host Sherri Shepherd in 2014. They even shared cheerful tweets following a romantic date in Houston.
Then, according to a source, Sherri, who had recently divorced, wanted to take things slowly with Johnny.
Here’s what she said about Johnny the last time she posted on Instagram.
We haven’t heard from the pair since.
Johnny has been associated with a number of women during his life, but he has never married any of them.
Johnny’s Perspective on Fatherhood
Johnny has a large number of children in his life, 12 to be exact. His nieces and nephews refer to him as ‘Uncle Johnny.’
So he had a lot of practice before he became a father for the first time. His son, Isiah Gill, was born in 2006 and is now around 15 years old.
Johnny takes parenting seriously and considers having children to be a privilege and a blessing. And he feels the same way about his son. He sees it as a chance to help and mold their life through our truths.
That could be why he believes co-parenting is not the best approach to raising children. When he dropped him off at the airport, his son would reach out his arms and weep, ‘Daddy,’ which made dad feel terrible.
He told himself after a number of those circumstances that he would never be in a co-parenting arrangement again. He is, however, fortunate to have had a nice relationship with Isiah’s mother.
Is Johnny Gill a gay man?
Johnny Gill and Eddie Murphy are practically inseparable and have been photographed together at many events. They have a very close friendship.
And because of his great bond with famed actor Johnny Depp, Johnny’s sexuality has been called into doubt several times.
Johnny Gill’s ex-girlfriend told Atlanta Gossip in 2005 that he was behaving straight due to Hollywood pressure. When asked to elaborate on Johnny and Eddie’s friendship, she stated,
“Johnny and Eddie have always been very close friends, but I could not compete with their relationship. It was strange…I can’t even explain it”
Finally, in a 2013 interview with Omg! Insider, he went to great efforts to clarify that he was gay.
Johnny claimed that during his relationship with Carissa, she had questioned his sexuality, and he had to take a lie detector exam to assuage her concerns.
“I’m going to tell you guys something off the record that I know my girlfriend probably won’t be happy with me for saying this, to talk about this. But I’m going to say it. When we first got together – we’ve been together for five years – there was so much stuff floating around why are you dating this guy, this guy, he’s gay, blah, blah, blah, Eddie Murphy. All this stuff is going on and I’m like, ‘Do you believe it?'”
Answering his question, she answered no, but I just keep hearing everyone say. In response, he said,
“Here’s what we are going to do…’ Woke up, we got the yellow pages, and you know, I mean, that was five years ago … So, we called this guy, he brought out his machine, strapped down to take a lie detector test. I wrote down questions, I made her write down questions … When the guy called back with the results and we both laying there in the bed. Tears came down … I would never want to lay next to someone that might even remotely have any doubt or question of who I am.”
He went on to say that he never wanted anyone living with him to have recurring worries about his sexuality.
Amidst Persistent Gay Rumors, a New Edition Drama and an Aretha Franklin Tribute
Jhonny and the other members of the R&B group New Edition – Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe, and Ralph Tresvant – were a fixture in the R&B scene after chart-topping singles Candy Girl and Cool It Now in the mid-’80s. Since then, the group has been embroiled in a slew of issues.
The most recent development involves four of its members, minus Jhonny and Ralph, embarking on a tour under the brand new moniker RBRM. Members of the RBRM have accused Jhonny and Ralph of unethical business transactions, which Jhonny categorically denies. He expressed his disappointment in a statement, saying:
“This is not our first irreconciliation, and it most certainly won’t be our last moment tackling issues, as there are certain members involved who seem to believe in taking their issues to social media, as opposed to dealing with things like grown men.”
Following Aretha Franklin’s untimely death in August 2018, Jhonny and other musicians paid tribute to the late Queen of Soul at a concert. The gathering was planned only a few hours before Aretha Franklin’s memorial funeral.
