Keira Knightley’s life to-do list never truly included getting married until she went ahead and did it. She refused to change her surname even after marrying her celebrity husband, James Righton, but that was until lately.
Keira Knightley Adopts Her Husband’s Last Name
Keira Knightley submitted the papers to Companies House in April 2021, starting the wheels in motion to change her surname to match her husband’s, according to Dailymail.
However, this was not the first time the famous actress attempted to change her last name. Knightley was reportedly pondering altering her surname six years ago but decided against it after getting cold feet.
I went to get my passport renewed. ‘Should I do it?’ I wondered. It will be beneficial.’ However, you must see it written down, which I was unable to do. I was unable to visit.

However, Knightley’s refusal to change her surname was a reaction to the way she was raised. She was born into a household that did not believe in marriage as an institution.
Knightley, in keeping with her family values, believed that marriage was futile. Nonetheless, she told Time Out magazine that she had enjoyed herself (via Evening Standard).
She went on to say that her parents were “deeply hippies” who only married because it was the only way they could acquire a mortgage for their house.
“”They used to say, ‘I don’t see why you’d ever get married,’ and then we did,” she continued. But it’s been a lot of fun.”
On May 4, 2013, Knightley married her spouse in a small ceremony in Mazan, Vaucluse, in the south of France. She donned an outfit made by Karl Lagerfeld for her big day.
Keira Knightley’s Relationship with Her Husband
While rumors that Knightley met her husband through Alexa Chung continue to circulate, she clarified their relationship in an interview with The Guardian (via The Things).
They met through a mutual acquaintance named Tim, not Chung, according to the Pirates of the Caribbean actress. Both of them were heavily inebriated at the time of their first encounter.
She explained, “He’s the type of person that will be the brightest light in any room, but I’m the one who sits in the corner.” In her instance, it appears that opposites do indeed attract.
James Righton, Keira Knightley’s Husband, Who Is He?
For those who don’t know, Knightley’s husband, Righton, was a very unknown singer when he first began dating the famous actress in 2011.

He was a member of the London-based dance band Klaxons, whose debut album Myths of the Near Future charted at #2 in the United Kingdom. However, they were unable to capitalize on their success, and the band disbanded in 2015.
Surprisingly, when they initially started hanging out, Knightley had no idea who Righton was or that he was in a band. It turns out she was in the United States at the time her future husband was gaining prominence on the other side of the Atlantic.
