Dr. Siaw-Lin Liaw, a Malaysian Chinese father, and Dr. Joyce Hill AM, a Singaporean-born English mother, gave birth to Liaw on September 8, 1978, in Penang, Malaysia. He is the middle child in a family of three, with an older brother and a younger sister.
The family moved to Adelaide when Liaw was three years old. Liaw stayed with his paternal grandmother after his parents divorced and his mother moved to New Zealand. He credits her with having a significant influence on his cooking and life.
At the age of 14, Liaw completed Year 11 at Prince Alfred College and enrolled in university at the age of 16. He graduated from the University of Adelaide with a double degree in Science and Law at the age of 21.

Liaw announced on Twitter on September 29, 2009, that he was considering auditioning for MasterChef. He was named one of the top 24 finalists in Season 2 of MasterChef Australia in April 2010. Despite winning a challenge in which he had to prepare meals for famous chefs, Liaw believed he could win the championship.
On July 25, 2010, he was crowned MasterChef Australia Season 2 champion, defeating Callum Hann 89–82.
After winning MasterChef Season 2, Liaw was allowed to write his cookbook. The book, titled Two Asian Kitchens, was published by Random House Australia in April 2011. In two sections, Liaw looks at dishes he grew up with as well as new creations: the Old Kitchen and the New Kitchen.
