Kipchoge was born in Kapsisiywa, Nandi County, Kenya on November 5, 1894. He was born to Janet Rotich and had no recollection of his father, who died when he was very young.
He was the youngest of five brothers, raised by their nursery school teacher mother.
Kipchoge used to run two miles daily on his way to school, graduating from Kapitel Secondary School in 1999.
In 2001, he met his trainer Patrick Sang, who guided him through his career, when he was 16 years old.

Kipchoge won the Kenyan trials for the 2002 IAAF World Cross Country Championships junior race when he was 17 years old.
Similarly, he finished fifth in the World Cross Country Championships in Dublin and was a member of the Kenyan junior team that won gold.
Eliud Kipchoge set a world junior record in the 5000m at the 2003 Bislett Games, finishing in 12:52:61 minutes. His record was the world and African junior record until 2012.

He made his debut in April, demonstrating a smooth transition to the longer distance by winning the Hamburg Marathon in 2:05:30 hours, setting a new course record.
