Beginning
Larry Kaplan, David Crane, Alan Miller, Bob Whitehead, and Jim Levy created Activision on October 1st, with Jim Levy serving as the company’s CEO. Former Atari game developers who were dissatisfied with their treatment at their previous business founded Activision.
To set themselves apart from Atari, Activision’s games were packaged in brightly colored boxes with an in-game screenshot on the back cover. They were hugely successful after the debut of his video game “Pitfall!” in 1982, which sold over 4 million copies. In 1983, the company had its first initial public offering.
Evolution
During the historic video game crash of 1983, everything changed for every video game production company, including Activision. Its revenue and sales both decreased. That year, Larry Kaplan left, followed by Alan Miller and Bob Whitehead the following year. It began by generating games like “Little Computer People” and “Hacker” to focus on developing home computers.
It bought Infocom in 1986, and six months later, Jim Levy was replaced by Bruce Davis. In the same year, David Crane quit the company. After a few years, in 1988, it expanded into corporate applications and renamed itself Mediagenic, which included Activision, Infocom, Gamestar, and Ten Point O. It released the popular game “The Manhole” in 1988. Bruce Davis’ tenure at the company was not fruitful, and it was eventually sold to Bobby Kotick and other investors in 1991.
The business later released the game “Return to Zork,” which was a huge hit. In 1992, Mediagenic reverted to its original name Activision. In 1993, the new it went public. Its games “MechWarrior 2: Ghost Bear’s Legacy” and “MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries” brought in more than $70 million in revenue. It released the game “Heavy Gear” in 1997, which was a huge critical success.
The corporation changed its name to Activision Publishing, Inc. three years later, in 2000. Between 1997 and 2008, the corporation acquired 25 companies, including “Raven Software,” “Infinity Ward,” and “Toys for Bob.” Activision combined with Vivendi Games in 2008 to form Activision Blizzard, which was valued at $18.9 billion at the time. Following the merger, Activision Publishing remained a part of Activision Blizzard.
From 2010 through 2018, Eric Hirshberg was the CEO of Activision Publishing. Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games collaborated on the popular game “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3,” which was released by Activision in 2011. To say the least, the game was a huge hit, grossing $400 million and selling 6.5 million copies in the United States.
