Herbert Richard Peters was born on May 7, 1947, in American Fork, Utah, to Carol and Paul Richard Peters. While he was still a child, his parents divorced, and his mother quickly remarried Duane Barlow Herbert, who formally adopted him. Herbert’s father also remarried, but he and his paternal half-siblings were raised in separate families and had little contact. Governor Herbert grew up in the Utah town of Orem.
He attended Orem High School and served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern States Mission. Later, he attended Brigham Young University but did not complete his education there.
Career and Professional Life
Herbert served in the Utah Army National Guard for six years, rising to the rank of staff sergeant. After serving in the National Guard, he founded Herbert and Associates Realtors.
Herbert was elected president of the Utah Association of Counties and the Utah Association of Realtors.

The Huntsman-Herbert ticket defeated incumbent governor Olene S. Walker at the convention before going on to win the November election. Later, Herbert was named lieutenant governor. Merit gave two $25,000 checks to Herbert’s campaign on November 2, 2009, and January 21, 2010, and Herbert and Lampropoulos met in October 2009.
