Stephan and political strategist Krystal Ball co-hosted The Cycle on MSNBC in March 2013. In the same month, he was confirmed as the host of another MSNBC show, Up with Steve Kornacki, which would begin airing in April. On Saturdays and Sundays, the show aired from 8 to 10 a.m. ET.

He is of mixed Lithuanian and Polish ancestry. Kathryn Kornacki, his older sister, is a professor at Caldwell University.

Steve came out as gay on November 16, 2011, after suppressing his feelings for half of his life and attempting to live as a straight man while being gay. He chronicled the entire experience—his story as a gay man—while working at Salon, where he had his tale published.
He notified his family a week before the publication, and they said, “We’re proud of you.”

Kornacki also talked about surreptitiously dating men online in the same story. He met a special individual who happened to be in a similar predicament, and he referred to that boyfriend as ‘Dan,’ despite the fact that it wasn’t his true name.
Dan, Kornacki’s boyfriend, came out as gay in 2010 and sought to see his parents. The American news celebrity, however, turned down the offer due to paranoia and therefore lost his loving partner.
That remorse, that sense of camaraderie he had and eventually lost, was the catalyst for him to come out as gay. He did, and he’s been extremely open about his sexuality since then.

If he hadn’t come out as gay, he would have married a girl since it was the only option left to him—that or spend the rest of his life without a spouse, children, or family of his own.
He used comedy to let some of his grief out in order to not suffocate in the misery and challenges of living as a closeted gay guy. That tendency persisted even after he came out about his sexuality.
Steve joked about his relationship in public a couple years after coming out as gay (in 2011). On 17 September 2015, when a random Twitter user asked if he had a wife, he sarcastically answered,
“I’ve been happily married to my wife Ginny for 14 years.”
His honest and amusing relationship tweets over the years illustrate his persisting anxieties. In 2018, though, he appears to be on the lookout for a spouse, but this time with more freedom, moving away from his problematic upbringing.
