It turned out to be a wise decision, as he was forced to stay in the green room during the event and was drafted by the Indiana Pacers as the 10th overall pick. He officially joined the Pacers on July 1 after signing a two-year, $3.9 million deferred rookie contract.
On October 27, he made his NBA debut, scoring four points in 23 minutes of action against the San Antonio Spurs. He had appeared in 61 games during his rookie season, starting 19 of them and averaging 7.8 points per game. George started all 66 games for the New York Knicks in 2011-12, averaging 12.1 points per game. He was selected to compete in the Slam Dunk Contest and the Rising Stars Challenge during the 2012 NBA All-Star Weekend.
When George first entered the NBA, he was a shooting guard. He was moved to the small forward position in his third season as a professional basketball player. His breakout season (2012-13) cemented his status as one of the league’s top players. While starting all 79 games and earning the NBA’s Most Improved Player award, he averaged 17.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.
The following year, he had an even better season. The Pacers extended his contract and named him as their designated player on September 25, 2013. He played in 80 games for an average of 21.7 points per game. For the fourth time in a row, his team competed, but they were defeated by the Miami Heat. The Pacers had lost to the Heat in the playoffs for the third time in a row.
George was expected to join the US national team’s training camp roster as they prepare for their FIBA Basketball World Cup invitation in Spain in 2014. During a scrimmage with Houston Rockets’ James Harden in Las Vegas on August 1, 2014, he suffered a compound fracture of both bones in his lower right leg.
During surgery, a pin was inserted into his leg. It was initially assumed that he would be out for the entire season. He returned later in the season to play in six games, averaging 8.8 points per game. George was fined $10,000 after openly blaming the referees in the 2015-16 season opener against the Toronto Raptors. During the regular season, he played in 81 games, averaging 23.1 points per game.
He scored 27.3 points per game in seven playoff games that year. This was his first postseason start since 2014. With the Pacers in 2016-17, he had his best season in the NBA to date. During the regular season, he averaged 23.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game in 75 games. In the postseason, he started to play well, appearing in four games and averaging 28.0 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per game. He was named to the NBA All-Star game the following year.
On July 6, 2017, the Pacers traded George to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis. The team’s first season with him was a success. Despite his new team, George was named to the starting lineup in all 79 of his games, averaging 2.19 points per contest.
