On February 14, 2021, William McDowell posted a sweet image of his wife, Gladys Knight, on Instagram, wishing her a happy Valentine’s Day.
Valentine’s Day could not have come at a better time for the musical pair to commemorate their 20 years of marriage. In the message, he also hinted that Gladys Knight and he had been married for 20 years. The message seems to be directed at those who believed and stated that their relationship would not endure long.
“Happy Valentines Day #20 in the books and counting,” the caption stated. They said it wouldn’t last…”
Following that, supporters flocked to the comment area to express their congratulations and praise for the couple.
“Soulmate love lasts forever,” one fan commented. “I wish you both a very happy Valentine’s Day.” “Provided them wrong!!!” wrote another user. Haters are going to hate. “I congratulate you both.” Another chimed in: Haters… They’d observe you walk on water and assume you couldn’t swim. Here’s to another 20 years.
The musician, who has a little over 1200 Instagram followers, has received about 200 likes and over 25 comments on the stated post as of this writing.
Knight and McDowell have been married since 2001, when they walked down the aisle. The power couple has been enjoying a happy life together since then. They live in the state of North Carolina. Furthermore, the pair’s mutual love of music adds to the uniqueness of their bond. Both of them have shown love, support, and respect for one other’s work, as evidenced by their social media posts. In one recent instance, McDowell tagged a photo of Knight with the words “Just one word. Empress!” implying that the musician cherishes his wife both professionally and personally.
Having said that, Knight is not married to McDowell for the first time. Before marrying her current husband, the Empress of Soul was married three times.
Her first marriage, at the age of 16, was to James Newman in 1960. With him, she had two children, James Newman III and Kenya Newman. Her marriage to Newman, on the other hand, lasted only 13 years before they divorced due to his reported drug addiction.
The singer married for the second time in 1974. She married Barry Hankerson, a record producer. She then gave birth to a son named Shanga Hankerson before the couple decided to divorce in 1979.
Knight remained positive in her search for love, which led her to Les Brown, a motivational speaker and novelist. They married in 1995, but their union was also short-lived, as they divorced after only two years of marriage.
Despite her three disastrous marriages, the singer of “If I Were Your Woman” opted to marry for the fourth time, this time to McDowell. And, as they say, fate favors the brave—it takes a lot to hold someone’s hand after what Knight has gone through in her love life, and Knight and McDowell have been together for 20 years.
