Genya Shinazugawa– Biography, Facts & Life Story
Genya Shinazugawa appears in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba as a major supporting character. He is a Demon Slayer in the Demon Slayer Corps, as well as the younger brother of Sanemi Shinazugawa, the Wind Hashira.
Appearance
Genya Shinazugawa was a short, young man with large, inward-slanting eyes when he made his debut during the Final Selection. His brows were furrowed all the time, giving him an angry expression. His hair is buzzed, with only a small clump of messy black hair on the top of his head left to grow. He also had a large, jagged scar that ran from his ear to over his nose on his right cheekbone.
Genya wears a purple sleeveless yukata over a plain black shirt with long sleeves in his first appearance.
Genya later appeared in the Butterfly Mansion with a much more feral appearance, having grown to almost six feet tall after a growth spurt. His hair is also much longer, and he wears it in a mohawk style with the strands visible around his neck. () He also grew more muscular and developed numerous scars all over his body, according to reports. His hair turns bright yellow after the Swordsmith Village Arc.
His outfit changed after he became a Demon Slayer, to a dark olive-green version of the Demon Slayer uniform, which he wore over his old purple yukata.
Power and Abilities
Demonic Transformation: Genya could temporarily gain demonic attributes by consuming the live flesh of a Demon. Depending on the individual’s strength, he may be able to regenerate and gain physical strength equal to one. Genya is capable of briefly overpowering Aizetsu in this form.
Upper Rank 4 Empowerment: Genya gained enough strength and speed after consuming Zohakuten’s wood to throw three trees in quick succession. In his battle with Kokushibo, the full extent of his demonification after eating some of the Upper Rank 4’s flesh is revealed: despite Kokushibo viciously bifurcating him across his abdomen and cutting off both of his arms, he did not die, demonstrating that, like a true demon, Genya could now only be killed by decapitation.
Upper Rank 1 Empowerment: Genya’s demonic abilities were further enhanced after eating Kokushibo’s hair, as evidenced by his ability to reattach his severed body in seconds and even intercept Muzan Kibutsuji’s telepathic communication. Genya began to take on several of Upper Rank One’s physical characteristics, such as his eyes and hair, after eating a piece of the Upper Rank’s Flesh Sword.
Later, the full extent of his enhanced demon abilities is revealed, revealing that even after being bifurcated and having half his head sliced cleanly in half, Genya was not only alive and conscious, but also had the strength to activate his Blood Demon Arts. Genya, like a true demon, disintegrated to ash when he succumbed to his severe wounds.
Blood Demon Art: Genya had apparently developed his own Blood Demon Art while in the heat of battle against Upper Rank 1 after eating the flesh and cells of at least two Upper Ranks (Kokushibo and Hantengu). Genya’s Blood Demon Arts, like Nezuko’s, were designed to battle and inflict damage on other Demons.
Wooden Flesh Bullets: As a result of eating the cells of Upper Rank 1 and Upper Rank 4, Genya developed a unique technique in which he combines his demon-transformed cells with his sun steel bullets and gun, allowing him to freely manipulate the direction and velocity of the bullets when fired, allowing him to easily move around obstructions between the bullet and the intended target, as seen when his bullets grazed the ground.
When the bullets enter their target, they can grow into a massive tree, similar to the tree creatures of Upper-Rank Four’s Zohakuten form, and then entangle and wrap around the intended target, paralyzing them.

Repetitive Action: Gyomei Himejima taught him Repetitive Action to help him compensate for his lack of talent and aptitude for using Breath Styles. This technique primarily involves Genya repeating a set of words or phrases that help him focus on his assigned task, keep his mind clear, and block out pain.
Genya uses the Amida Sutra’s set of prayers to help him focus and steel his mind, as seen in his use of this technique to focus his mind after being fatally injured fighting Hantengu’s Clone Aizetsu, and to a degree, to replicate the effects of Full Focus Concentration Breathing.
Fighting Style
Expert Marksman: Genya is a master of shotguns, having successfully used them in a battle against both Upper Rank 4 and 1.
Personality
Genya is a foul-mouthed, irritable individual who is a “lone wolf” who refuses to accept help from others and has no interest in being polite or having good manners. Despite the fact that Kanata Ubuyashiki was a child, he roughed her up during the Final Selection by grabbing her hair and yelling at her. His irritable demeanor and brash demeanor are strikingly similar to that of his older brother, Sanemi.
During the battle against Hantengu, an Upper-Rank Demon, where he worked alongside Tanjiro Kamado, Mitsuri Kanroji, and Nezuko Kamado, he became more open to cooperation. He eventually learned to be more sociable and less ill-mannered towards others, particularly Tanjiro and his friends, after some time.
Sanemi’s refusal to acknowledge Genya made him feel insecure, as he realized how insignificant he is in comparison to his companions. Despite this, he did everything he could to aid his allies, even if it resulted in him being horribly maimed in the process. Despite his brother’s harsh rebukes, he harbored no malice toward him, as Tanjiro and eventually, Sanemi confirmed.

- Genya is not the first Demon Slayer Kokushibo has encountered who has gained power by consuming Demons.
- Genya appears to be shy around women, breaking out in a blush and losing the ability to communicate with them. This is evident when she interacts with the Butterfly Mansion’s Love Hashira, Mitsuri, and the younger girls who work there.
- Genya visits the Butterfly Mansion for health checks on a regular basis because of his unique Demon-eating abilities.
