Michelle Phan started a cosmetics lesson site in 2005 and began posting video tutorials on Xanga before debuting on YouTube in May 2007. Two of her “How To Get Lady Gaga’s Eyes” tutorials went viral after being featured on BuzzFeed in 2009 and 2010, helping her acquire 1 million subscribers. After using Lancôme products in her videos, Phan was named Lancôme’s official video makeup artist in 2010.
She co-founded MyGlam, a cosmetic product subscription service later called Ipsy, in 2011. In 2012, Michelle, a YouTube advertising partner, created FAWN, a multi-channel network. Michelle Phan’s makeup line, EM Cosmetics by Michelle Phan, was given to her by L’Oreal in 2013. The brand flopped because the pricing was prohibitively expensive for her youthful followers, but she bought L’Oreal’s part in 2013 and revived EM Cosmetics in 2017; she left Ipsy to focus on the cosmetics line.
In 2014, Michelle worked with Endemol Beyond USA to develop the ICON network on Roku and online. Shift Music Group, a record label, was also founded in collaboration with Cutting Edge Group. In 2018, Phan introduced Thematic, a “collaborative platform where producers can license music from their favorite artists in exchange for marketing.”
