Early Life
Sam Roland Heughan was born on April 30, 1980, in Balmaclellan, Dumfries, and Galloway, in the historic county of Kirkcudbrightshire.
His parents were members of Gandalf’s Garden, a London hippy commune highly influenced by J. R. R. Tolkien’s works, which led him and his older brother Cirdan to be named after characters from The Lord of the Rings.
Chrissie Heughan, their father’s mother, battled to raise the two boys when their father abandoned them when they were both little. Heughan moved to adjacent New Galloway at the age of five, where he attended Kells Primary School. He lived in refurbished stables on the grounds of Kenmure Castle during this time.
He moved to Edinburgh at a young age. For a year, he attended James Gillespie’s High School before switching to the Edinburgh Rudolf Steiner School until his sixth year.
He then worked and traveled for two years before enrolling in the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, where he graduated in 2003.
In 2002, immediately before graduation, Heughan was one of four students chosen to represent RSAMD at the BBC Carlton Hobbs radio talent competition.
