Lavell Crawford, a stand-up comedian, is a large family man.
Lavell Crawford is married to DeShawn Crawford and they have a son named LJ Crawford together. While he has established himself as a one-of-a-kind father throughout the years, the Breaking Bad star did not have the same upbringing as his father.
Daryl Crawford, Lavell’s father, abandoned his family when he was a child. His mother, Annita Crawford, was left to raise him and his sisters alone.
In an April 2017 interview with DJ Vlad, the 52-year-old comic explained why his father abandoned his family. He disclosed that his father was gay, and since he was afraid to admit the truth, he chose to flee.
He stated, “My father is gay.” “He came out of the closet, or rather, he fled away.” For like…20 years, we didn’t get to see him.”
He went on to say that his family didn’t find out his father was gay until he returned after more than two decades. Lavell also joked that he didn’t know how to respond when he found out the facts during the honest talk. He couldn’t believe his father had fled for that reason alone.
After he returned, the St. Louis native asked his father if it was “the reason you stayed away?” He continued, “It was weird because my wife, you know, she called it that…there ain’t no excuse for a man to be away from his kids for that long unless he gay, he has something to hide.”
Daryl was married to a white man when the family reconnected with him. He died in 2015, thus the family reunion didn’t last long. He was a competitive bodybuilder who competed in a variety of bodybuilding events before his death, including the 2011 NPC Masters Nationals.
As Momma’s Boy, Lavell Crawford introduces himself.
Lavell holds a special place in his heart for his mother, Annita, because he was reared by her. He refers to himself as a “momma’s kid” and frequently shares her photos on social media.
On her birthday, August 20, 2020, he published a post devoted to her. He wished her well and thanked her for never abandoning him. He also expressed gratitude to Jesus for providing him with a “mommy” like her.
On the 2015 Mother’s Day special episode of Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show, Lavell also discussed his mother.
“I’m a mommy’s son,” he explained, “and I’m trying to see who else loves their momma.”
