Albert Leornes Greene was born in Forrest City, Arkansas, on April 13, 1946. He grew up with his mother, Cora Lee, and father, Robert Jr., and had nine siblings.
Al and his brothers formed the Green Brothers, a singing group when they were ten years old. In the late 1950s, his family relocated to Grand Rapids, Michigan, and when he was a teenager, his father ejected him from the house for listening to soul singer Jackie Wilson’s music.
The 75-year-old began abusing narcotics and living with his prostitute girlfriend. Green formed the vocal group Al Greene & the Creations while still in high school.

Before recording his debut solo album, “Green Is Blues,” in 1969, Al Green dropped the last “e” from his last name. “Let’s Stay Together,” his first Gold album, was released in 1972, and the title single hit #1 on the “Billboard” Hot 100 and is still his most popular song. Later that year, Green’s album “I’m Still in Love with You” was certified Platinum, and the title track and “Look What You Did for Me” were both certified Gold.
As the artist’s commercial success faded, he shifted his focus to gospel music, recording six albums for the Christian label Myrrh Records. In 1980, Al won two Grammys for his first gospel album, “The Lord Will Make a Way.”
Green co-starred with Patti LaBelle in “Your Arms Too Short to Box with God” on Broadway in 1982. In 1984, he was featured in the documentary “Gospel According to Al Green.” Al made a comeback to secular music in 1988 with Annie Lennox’s “Put a Little Love in Your Heart.” Green’s most recent album, “Lay It Down,” was produced by Questlove of The Roots and featured Queen Latifah, John Legend, Ann Nesby, and Questlove of The Roots. Relationship Status
When it came to Al Green’s love life, it was anything but easy. In 1974, Al Green’s girlfriend, Mary Woodson, assaulted him at his Memphis home. Since Woodson refused to marry Green despite the fact that she was already married, he hurled scorching grits at her, causing second-degree burns.
Mary then shot herself in the head with Al’s gun and committed suicide. After the tragic event, he resolved to make a positive change in his life, and in 1976, he founded the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church in Memphis, where he has been preaching and singing ever since.
On June 15, 1977, the singer married Shirley Kyles, and the couple had three children before divorcing in 1983. Shirley claimed that Al abused her during their marriage, and she testified that Green struck her with a boot while she was five months pregnant, resulting in a head wound that required stitches.
