David Duchovny is a true artist at heart. He’s experimented with television writing, book writing, acting, directing, producing, and now music. The actor most known for The X-Files only began playing the guitar in 2014, but it appears that he is a quick study because his debut album, ‘Hell or Highwater,’ was released the following year, surprising everyone.
Despite a busy schedule of acting and writing duties, the multidimensional artist put his newfound musical skills to good use and released a follow-up album, ‘Every Third Thought,’ in 2018. In the year 2020, David Duchovny began work on what would become his debut album. Gestureland will be released on August 20, 2021.
Music has always been significant to Duchovny
Duchovny talked about his musical path in a recent interview with Headliner Magazine. He explained that he had always been a music fan.
He recalled his early years, when he would save up whatever money he could to buy records at Free Being, a record store on 8th Street and 2nd Avenue in New York City, where he grew up.
An record for $3.99 was noteworthy to me, but I debated for a long time whether I wanted to pay $11.99 for Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, which is a double album.
He mentioned that music was not just something he enjoyed as a child. Rather, it was something for which he was willing to make a sacrifice. The actor even admitted to pursuing part-time jobs after school to supplement his income and purchase CDs.
After his divorce, he began playing the guitar
After getting divorced in August 2014, the actor was said to be in a fragile position. He had a lot of free time now that his kids were staying with his ex-wife, Tea Leoni. So, in order to get through the difficult times, he picked up the guitar.
The actor told the publication that creating songs had never occurred to him at the time. He claimed he had never performed as a vocalist. He maintained, in fact, that he was the polar opposite of a vocalist. However, after roughly a year of playing the instrument, he astonished himself by starting to write songs. He continued,
I began to put chords together and to hear melodies. And I was more shocked that I could write music than that I could write words. That was simply how it turned out.
He came up with a song
Duchovny shared how he went about writing his debut song later in the conversation. But it wasn’t quite a “let me write a song” moment. The songwriter, who is still in his early twenties, says he just happened onto it.

It was only a split second before he understood what he’d written was a song. At the time, he had no idea if it was a good or horrible song. But it was just a song, so he continued on.
He ultimately made his way to Keaton Simmons, the son of one of his friends. With a setup in his garage, Simmons assisted the actor in recording a few tunes, which the actor then took home on his phone. Until that time, the music had been solely for his enjoyment. But one thing led to another, and now we’re waiting for his debut album, which is set to be released this week.
