Ita was born in Sydney, the heart of Australia. She was born on January 17, 1942, and was named Ita Clare Rodgers after her maternal grandmother. Her parents raised Ita in a Catholic household. Her father, Charles Oswald, was a journalist and former editor of the Sydney Daily Mirror. She decided to be a journalist and pursue journalism as a career when she was only 11 years old, inspired by her father.
Starting as a copy girl in Australian Women’s Weekly magazine, she was promoted to reporter and then to editor at the Daily Telegraph. She has a long history of professional success in journalism.
After being hired as the editor in chief of the Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Telegraph in 1981, she became the first woman to edit a major Australian metropolitan newspaper. With all of her successful years in business, Ita has amassed a whopping net worth of more than $82 million.
