Angela James Bio
In Toronto, Canada, on December 22, 1964, Angela James was born. Leo James, a black American from Mississippi who immigrated to Canada from racially divided Mississippi, and Donna Barrato, a white Canadian, were her parents. Donna, a single mother, reared Angela and her two half-sisters with the help of the government. Childhood for Angela was difficult since she had to deal with prejudice and slurs from her peers because she was a mixed-race child.
Angela loved sports and was excellent in hockey, baseball, and synchronized swimming, but hockey became her obsession. At the age of eight, she joined a Flemingdon Park Boys House League and began playing hockey in an organized setting.
Her Hockey Career
After she graduated, Angela continued to pursue her passion for hockey. She began playing for the Toronto Islanders in 1980, where she was a central defender. She became the league’s top player in less than a year. She then participated in the 1982 first women’s national tournament, where her team defeated Team Alberta 3-2 in overtime to claim the McTeer Cup.
In 1990, 1992, 1994, and 1997, Angela led the Canadian women’s hockey team to four global titles while carrying her records with her. She is still the only black athlete to have led Canada as a senior international captain in history. Angela was the first black woman to be honored in the IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation) Hall of Fame in 2008. Two years later, Angela was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame for her pioneering and dominating contributions to women’s hockey. In 2009, she was also admitted to the Sports Hall of Fame of Canada.
James is currently Seneca College’s senior athletics coordinator. In Canada, she is also licensed as a coach and referee.
Angela James Married, Husband

Angela struggled with her sexuality from the start of her teenage years, but as time went on, she became more and more certain that she was a lesbian. She had to search for the woman of her dreams for a very long time. She met Ange, the woman she is now married to, in 1994. They grew close and eventually developed feelings for one another.
They eventually started dating after they were unable to ignore the sparks. Angela and Ange made the decision to get married and spend the rest of their lives together after two years of dating. Ange gave birth to their first child, Christian, in 1999, and Angela delivered Michael and Toni, fraternal twins, in 2004. Ange and Angela currently have a sweet family that includes their kids.
