Scottish actor Richard Rankin is best known for his work in the television series Outlander (2016–2020), The Crimson Field (2014), and Burnistoun (2009-2012).

He has received recognition for his work on numerous occasions, including the Best Actor award from the 48-Hour Film Project in 2011 for his part in the short film Dead Ringer.

On January 4, 1983, in Glasgow, Scotland, Richard Harris was given the name Richard Rankin.

His family lived in a flat on Byres Road in the west end for the majority of his early years until moving to King’s Park on the south side when he was 10 years old.

He is the oldest of his father Colin’s and mother Margaret’s four sons. His father was a drummer who had been active in music before changing careers to become a police officer. In 2018, he passed away. His mother is employed in the hospitality sector.

Richard attended Glasgow Caledonian University to study information technology. Later, he pursued acting studies at Glasgow, Scotland’s Langside College.

Career

Richard Rankin started working in a bank after receiving his IT degree, and while there, he took a trip to Hollywood and stayed at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. He ran across several filmmakers there and struck up a conversation with them. One of the group’s producers commented on his outstanding looks for acting and inquired as to whether or not he had considered a career in the field. This incident gave him a modest notion that inspired him to seek an acting profession.

He enrolled in acting classes after moving back to Glasgow, where he had grown up, and soon got a part in the play Mary Queen of Scots. He gradually started to acquire roles in both theatrical productions and television.

His early TV gigs include cameos in the 2007 television series Legit as Nelson and the 2009 television series The Old Guys as Groom.

When he was chosen for a recurring part in the television series Burnistoun, he got his big break.

He played Him in the 2014 film The House of Him, which marked his big-screen debut. He played Capt. Thomas Gillan in the television series The Crimson Field that same year.

Richard appeared as Sean McGary in the television series The Syndicate the next year, and in the TV miniseries Thirteen in 2016, he played DI Elliott Carne. Additionally, he played Roger Wakefield, a well-known character, in the hit TV series Outlander from 2016 until 2020.
