He was born in 1937 to baker Richard Arthus Hopkins and Annie Muriel Hopkins in the Margan neighborhood of Port Talbot, Glamorgan. He attended the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff, Cowbridge Grammar School in the Vale of Glamorgan, Jones’ West Monmouth Boys’ School in Pontypool, and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Following a stage performance in 1960 at Swansea’s Palace Theatre, Anthony then started his professional career. Laurence Olivier, an English actor, later saw Anthony and urged him to join the Royal National Theatre in London after noticing him. Later, when Laurence developed appendicitis while performing in August Strindberg’s The Dance of Death, he took over as Laurence’s replacement.

Anthony soon after had his big-screen debut in Changes in 1964 and then his small-screen debut in A Flea in Her Ear in 1967. But it wasn’t until he played Richard the Lionheart in The Lion in Winter that he had his big break.
