Gabriel González Videla was born on November 22, 1898, in the coastal city of La Serena. González Castillo and Teresa Videla Zepeda greeted him with open arms. He was the eldest of seven Spanish-born siblings. Gabriel graduated from Liceo de La Serena and then went on to study law at the University of Chile. However, his father was paralyzed in a horrific accident the same year as his graduation. Due to his father’s condition, he was obliged to return to La Serena.
During his college years, Gabriel joined the Radical Party’s youth branch. Similarly, he later joined La Serena’s Radical Assembly. In 1924, he took part in demonstrations against the military government of Luis Altamirano. Gonzalez was driven into hiding after making a proclamation to the president. In 1946, Gabriel eventually won the Radical Party’s primaries. He chose to revive the Democratic Alliance, which helped Juan Antonio Rosas gain power in 1942. However, he was unsuccessful since the Socialist Party rejected the coalition offer. Similarly, Gonzalez was only supported by his Radical and Communist parties. Gonzalez, by contrast, won 40% of the vote. The election was sent to Congress after González fell short of the requisite 50% turnout. He was lucky enough to be confirmed on October 24, of that year.
Gabrial was elected President of Chile in 1946. As a result of the Moscow-Washington conflict, Chile was swiftly drawn into the international cold war. The worker’s union was shattered by the cold war. Gonzalez had tension with his Communist allies despite his presidential status. The communist demanded more seats, which he rejected. The communist party afterward withdrew its backing. Furthermore, in 1948, he learned of a scheme by some members of the Armed Forces to stage a coup against him and install Carlos Ibáez as president.
