After participating in a few theater productions, the Ohio-born actor earned the role of Detective Schreiber alongside Al Pacino in the controversial film Cruising in 1980.

Not long after, he met Catherine Rusoff, the eventual mother of his children and a fellow actor. Following their marriage, the pair relocated to Hollywood in 1987 for the television sitcom Married With Children.

Ed’s first contract was only for six episodes. Even though the show became Fox’s first smash, it went on — and on — giving Rusoff’s spouse success, financial security, and additional notoriety.

Catherine and O’Neill had previously split up.

While Catherine and Ed were able to keep the divorce out of their marriage, they did have a few bumps in the road during their romance.

Rusoff and her husband of over 35 years, together with their children, were reported to be living in the Brentwood region of California in January 2016.

Catherine was the one who persuaded Ed to audition for Married With Children.
O’Neill had recently completed work on Dogs of War with Christopher Walken and Tom Berenger, with whom he had a great working relationship.

Ed was performing in a few plays and making a lot of television appearances. In 1986, he was offered the role of Married With Children.

The Cruising actor, on the other hand, would turn down the Al Bundy job without reading it, because it was Christmas and he didn’t want to fly to the west for a seemingly pointless audition. Later, at their Greenwich Village apartment, his wife, Catherine, read the script.

She found the plot and idea amusing and couldn’t stop giggling as she read it. Ed was interested in the position after watching his wife’s reaction.
